I was recently able to talk to one of my best friends about her favorite makeup and skincare products and routines. This is the first in a series of interviews with women I adore and admire. I hope you enjoy and maybe discover something new!
Olivia Aleman, age 24
Skin Type: Combination
Skin Tone: Medium, Caramel
So, what is your go-to makeup look?
Winged eyeliner, eyelashes for days, plum lips and contouring. I find it to be intimidating [to others], and it makes me feel powerful in the way that no one can bring me down.
I’m the same way, eyelashes for days! What is one beauty product you can’t live without?
I was going to be all cool and say my favorite shade of lipstick, but I’m going to tell you the truth… It’s my one dollar Ever After High Apple White lip balm. My lips get badly chapped and crack a lot, because I laugh a lot and I have a big mouth, so my laughs crack my lips. But this cheap lip balm has kept them surprisingly smooth, and I actually remember to use it because of the cute design on it.
Is there anything else you do to help your skin? Anything skincare that you love?
I wash my face with St Ives Green Tea Scrub. After washing my face or showering, I use Garnier Moisture Rescue, which is fabulous and is the only thing that has worked for my dry face. I’ve also started to drink more water, which has cleared up my skin a lot. Water is key! For the rest of my body, I use St Ives Daily Hydrating Vitamin E lotion. Sometimes I use it for my face if I’m in a hurry. For my legs, since they’re mostly tattoos, I use Vaseline Intensive Rescue lotion, which is amazing to use over healing tattoos too. Also for my face I use this ointment my mom brought me from Mexico. I don’t know what it is, but it’s legit.
Do you have any beauty hacks you’d like to pass on?
For my winged eyeliner, I follow the natural shape of my eye, and use that as the outline of how I want to make the eye line (thick or thin) and then just fill that in. I hope that makes sense! Also cold running water can do the same thing as ice water for drying nail polish if you don’t want to sit with your fingers in ice water.
What is the story behind your eyebrows?
I have had thick brows all my life. They went almost to my hairline. And for some reason I fell in love with nub brows, or eyebrows that are razored into circles. And after five years of being ashamed of liking nub brows, I did them myself and I actually really like them on me. Someday I’ll probably really nub them, but I prefer these for now.
That’s all for now, but let me know if there’s anything else you’d like me to ask Olivia!
