Favorites: Mascaras

On most days, I wear little to no makeup. But there is one thing I will usually put on: mascara. A good mascara probably won’t change your life, but it will make you look more awake and put-together. And while there are some fantastic high-end ones (ahem… Urban Decay’s new Perversion), there’s still tons of good ones to choose from at the drugstore. Maybelline and L’Oreal are the mascara forerunners, and just in case you’re wondering, yes, Maybelline is owned by L’Oreal. Funnily enough, the universe of drugstore makeup is smaller than you thought. But that’s a story for another day.

While I happen to own about seven mascaras (trust me, my best friend has more), I only have a few that are my favorites. And while Maybelline’s Volume Rocket mascara is in my kit at all times, I don’t actually own one for my personal use. I should probably fix that. Anyway, on to the point of this post:

1. L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes: I currently own the waterproof version, and while that ones still pretty good, it’s kind of flaky. It’s also almost dried out, so I’ll be getting a regular version soon. What I like about this mascara, though, is the wiper on the inside. When you pull the wand out, the wiper takes off all the excess, so you end up with just the right amount on the wand. Why all mascaras don’t come with that nifty doodad, I don’t know. I personally think several could benefit from it. And it would certainly save quite a few paper towels.

2. Maybelline Lash Discovery mascara. I bought this mascara mostly for my bottom lashes. If you’re someone who can put mascara on their lower lashes without getting smudges EVERYWHERE, then I applaud you. And I also kind of hate you. The wand on this mascara is short and very thin, and even though I still blot it on a paper towel, it’s perfect for those little hard to reach places, in my case, my entire lower lash line. It still works great on the upper lashes, though. It adds a lot of definition and length. The only thing I don’t like is how long the wand is. If the entire wand were just a fraction of an inch shorter it would be perfect.

3. Rimmel Lash Accelerator mascara (original). This mascara is my win-win product: it gives good volume and length while conditioning the lashes to make them longer over time. What girl wouldn’t want that? I just wish the formula was a little more water-resistant, because, as it stands now, this mascara does smudge on me after a few hours. Which sucks, but I’ll take it if this mascara is actually conditioning my lashes. And when used in conjunction with the Rimmel Lash Accelerator Serum, LOOK OUT FULL LASHES AHEAD. (The serum also helps brows grow better. You know, just in case you were wondering.)

I’m still trying out the L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Excess mascara. So far, it’s not bad, but it is perfumed (you keep doing that L’Oreal, and it sucks) and the wiper doesn’t work as well as on the original Volume Million Lashes. Maybe mine’s just faulty. And, just in case you’re wondering, I despise mascaras with a flexible wand. They don’t allow me to really build up volume like a traditional firmer mascara wand. Whenever I go to wiggle the wand at the base of my lashes, the flexible wand usually goes all over the place and things wind up smudged and I wind up pissed. So I just generally avoid them.

Well, that’s about it, really. I’m not a terrible mascara snob, am I? I guess I don’t really have time to ponder on it tonight. I’ve got a load of laundry to do and brushes to clean. Guess who’s got a pageant to go to with Amber? That’s right. Me! So goodnight!
